How to layer a Little Black Dress

In order to gain the most wear out of my clothing I always try to layer my light weight items in colder months; it’s such a simple way to keep variety in my closet while staying warm. For this outfit I started with a thin cotton turtleneck dress I recently  picked up from H&M and paired it with bold leopard ankle boots and a thin belt to accentuate my waist. Leopard is really hit or miss but it usually looks best as a pop of pattern with all black and simple silhouettes.

Because a cotton dress isn’t really practical for December in New York I added black tights and a long knit cardigan. Can we talk about this cardigan? The length and color are so perfect I am always throwing it on over outfits which makes me feel like I’m getting away with wearing a nice looking robe. The oversized shape of this sweater looks great with tighter items like this dress, skinny jeans, and leggings.

For my final layer I added a colorful coat to mix up my all black outfit. Last winter I noticed when I wore a nice coat it felt as though my outfit completely came together. I try to keep my coat and dress a similar length so it looks more put together. As you can see below my coat looks slightly similar to a dress when buttoned up which again adds more variety to a simple black dress. When it gets colder I’m definitely going to add on mittens, a hat and scarf to this outfit.
